IntroGroundbreaking: The $32M Upgrade for the Pocono Pony
The dirt is officially moving in Swiftwater. This past Friday, the Monroe County Transportation Authority (MCTA) broke ground on the Wayne P. Mazur Sr. Bus Depot, and it’s more than just a place to park.
For a community hub like Poconos.best, we look at the infrastructure that keeps this region moving. Here is the breakdown of what this means for us:
The Specs & The Spend
- The Price Tag: $32 Million.
- The Footprint: 44,000 square feet of modern facility.
- The Completion: Slated for Spring 2028.
- The Location: Right in Swiftwater (Pocono Township).
Why It Matters (Beyond the Photo Op)
If you lived through the snow of 2026, you know the "Pocono Pony" sometimes gets stalled by the very weather it's supposed to help us navigate. Currently, the fleet—59 buses strong—sits outside.
- Operational Efficiency: Cold starts for Diesel and CNG buses are a nightmare. This indoor storage means buses are ready to roll at 5:00 AM without the "dig-out" delay.
- Security: CEO Rich Schlameuss mentioned that catalytic converter thefts have been a real drain on local transit funds (costing $1,000 a pop). Moving the fleet inside stops the bleed.
- Resilience: For the 80,000 annual paratransit trips taken by our seniors and neighbors with mobility challenges, "resilient transit" isn't a buzzword—it’s a lifeline to the grocery store and the doctor.
"Let Freedom Ring"
The bus you see in the backdrop is the "Let Freedom Ring" edition, part of the America250 celebration. As we head toward the nation's 250th anniversary this July, you’ll be seeing this wrap all over the county.
Local Roots
The facility is named after Wayne P. Mazur Sr., a lifelong Pocono Township resident who’s been on the MCTA board since it started in 1979. It was also great to see Florence, a longtime rider, represented at the event. Transit is about people, but people need reliable systems to get where they’re going.
This is a massive capital investment in our regional transit architecture. It’s about stripping away the "bloat" of weather delays and mechanical failures to get a cleaner, faster service for everyone from Stroudsburg to Mount Pocono.
Next time you see the Pony, just know: help is on the way for the fleet.
