IntroA historic fire in Allentown PA destroyed a former factory on North Front Street, displacing residents and drawing emergency crews from across the region. Learn more about the cause and aftermath.
A massive 6-alarm fire that broke out Wednesday evening in Allentown, Pennsylvania, destroyed an old furniture factory at the corner of North Front Street and Gordon Street. The inferno required the assistance of over two dozen fire departments across the region, including crews from Easton and Bethlehem.
The blaze began around 8:41 p.m., swiftly escalating to a level that saw multiple fire apparatus unable to approach due to intense heat and risk of collapse. The factory's structural integrity deteriorated rapidly, leading authorities to establish a "collapse zone" around the entire perimeter as potential hazards loomed.
Neighboring residents on North Front Street were evacuated through their backyards by emergency responders amidst warnings to remain inside. This precautionary measure was necessitated due to power outages affecting approximately 3,500 PPL customers and air quality concerns that led officials to issue a mandatory "shelter in place" order.
In the aftermath of the fire, which burned well into Thursday morning before being brought under control around midnight, Allentown Fire Chief Efrain Agosto described conditions as among the most extreme encountered. The structural damage was extensive, leaving parts of the roof and interior floors collapsed, rendering much of the building a shell.
The Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office announced that two juveniles have been taken into custody for their alleged involvement in starting the fire. They face charges including arson, causing a catastrophe, recklessly endangering another person, and conspiracy. Due to the severity of these offenses, both suspects remain in juvenile detention pending further legal proceedings.
The Fire Marshal's investigation continues as officials work to determine the exact cause of this devastating event that left Allentown grappling with significant infrastructure and community impacts.
