IntroRe-Engineering the 611: Inside the Plan to Fix the Poconos’ Broken North-South Artery
Route 611 isn't just a road; it’s the backbone of Monroe County. But for anyone living in Stroudsburg, Tannersville, or Mount Pocono, it’s currently a source of daily logistical friction. The Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance (NEPA), in coordination with PennDOT, is now entering the final phase of a $250,000 deep-dive study to re-engineer this corridor for the next decade.
The mission is clear: Solve the "Safety-Congestion-Growth" trilemma without turning the mountain landscape into a generic highway sprawl.
The Technical Diagnostics: Why 611 is Failing
Data gathered during the first phase of the study (January 2026) confirmed what locals already knew. Safety was the #1 concern, cited by 42% of residents. The technical diagnostics pinpointed several high-friction "mech" issues:
• Confusing Lane Markings: Specifically in the Tannersville stretch where the road transitions between business access and high-speed flow.
• Unsafe Left Turns: High-conflict points where left turns onto or off of 611 are nearly impossible during peak hours.
• Visibility & Speeding: Aggressive driving patterns and poor sightlines have turned specific segments—like the stretch between Scotrun and Tannersville—into high-accident zones.
The "Skinner Hill Hack"
One of the most innovative infrastructure recommendations being evaluated is the creation of a connection between Skinner Hill Road and the Shoppes at Stroud.
• The Logic: By creating this bypass, planners can divert significant shopping-bound traffic away from the main 611 artery.
• The Benefit: This would relieve pressure on the critical intersections in Stroud Township, allowing the 611 to function more as a thoroughfare and less like a parking lot for retail access.
The I-80 Factor
The urgency of this study is driven by the massive I-80 expansion project. The new interchange associated with I-80 is expected to dump significantly more traffic onto Route 611 in the Tannersville area. Without the re-engineering of 611’s "north-south" flow, the local grid risks a total systemic failure once the I-80 project hits full speed.
Action Item: Public Open House #2
This is the "final build" presentation. NEPA and their consultants (Michael Baker International) will be sharing the proposed roadway and corridor improvement recommendations. If you want to see the blueprints before they are finalized in June, you need to be there.
• Date: Wednesday, May 6, 2026
• Time: 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM (Formal Presentation at 6:00 PM)
• Location: Pocono Township Municipal Building (205 Old Mill Road, Tannersville)
