It's that time of year again! The 4th of July is upon us, and the Poconos region is getting ready to light up the night sky. From the massive, sky-filling extravaganzas over our lakes to the hidden gem community shows that give you that classic, bada-bing hometown feel, we've got you covered.
Here is the Poconos.best breakdown of where to catch the best fireworks this Independence Day, plus a quick refresher on the local laws so you don't end up with a hefty fine.
The Big Shows (Where Everyone Will Be) If you're looking for the massive, jaw-dropping displays, these are the heavy hitters:
- Lake Wallenpaupack (July 4th): The undisputed king of Poconos fireworks. The massive display fires off near Wallenpaupack Area High School around 9:00 p.m. Get there early, grab a spot on the bleachers or tailgate in the surrounding lots. The reflection on the lake is unbeatable.
- Kalahari Resorts (July 4th): "Kalahari KABOOM!" goes down at dusk. This is a massive production, but keep in mind it is strictly for resort guests and waterpark day-pass holders.
- Skytop Lodge: A Poconos classic. Skytop puts on a fantastic, upscale Independence Day celebration with live music, concessions, and a beautiful fireworks display.
The Hidden Gems & Local Favorites Want to skip the massive traffic jams and get that authentic, community vibe? Check out these smaller but incredible displays:
- North Pocono Fireworks Extravaganza (July 2): Held at the North Pocono Football Stadium in Moscow. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for live music, food, and an awesome community display (Rain date: July 6).
- Silver Birches in Hawley (July 4th): A great alternative on the lake! They host a celebration from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with food trucks, live music, and fireworks capping off the night over the water.
- Lehighton Downtown (July 4th): Looking for some deep history? Lehighton is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year with a special fireworks display right in the downtown area at 9:30 p.m.
Pennsylvania & Poconos Fireworks Restrictions If you are planning to put on your own backyard show, you absolutely need to know the laws. Pennsylvania allows the purchase of "Class C" consumer-grade fireworks (Roman candles, bottle rockets, firecrackers), but they come with very strict rules:
The 150-Foot Rule (The Big One) You CANNOT set off fireworks within 150 feet of an occupied structure or a vehicle. It doesn't matter if you own the house or not. In many tightly-packed Poconos developments and lake communities, this rule makes it physically impossible to legally shoot off aerial fireworks in your yard.
Other Statewide Rules: You must be 18+ to purchase and use them. You must have the express permission of the property owner to shoot them off. You cannot shoot them out of, or at, a building or vehicle. You cannot be under the influence of alcohol or drugs when lighting them. Time Limits: Normally, fireworks must stop at 10:00 p.m. However, there is a special exception for July 2, 3, and 4, where you are allowed to shoot them until 1:00 a.m.
Local Ordinances Trump State Law The most important thing to remember: Local townships in the Poconos can enact stricter rules. Some local municipalities have noise ordinances, require specific permits, or ban them entirely in certain zoned areas. Always check your specific township or borough website before lighting the fuse.
If you get a dud, wait 10 minutes, soak it in a bucket of water, and throw it out safely.
Have a fantastic, safe, and loud 4th of July, Poconos!
